Susan Tabia

Susan Tabia runs both Charlotte Baby Home and St Bartholowmew's orphanage through IWASSRU, an association of South Sudanese Widows. IWASSRU began in the refugee camps of northern Uganda during the 1990s at the peak of the Civil War. As the violence escalated, the camps becaming increasingly ill-equipped to deal with the increasing number of children orphaned from conflict or disease. Susan, herself a Sudanese widow, founded IWASSRU as she took in one abandoned child, which grew as the Southern Sudanese Episcopal Church donated land and resources for her to build a home to care for the increasing number of children in need of a family. Today, she has written a book about her experiences and remains a formidably well-respected member of South Sudanese society.

The mamas

Our mamas are incredibly hard-working and caring and are always on site, caring for the children, cooking and doing the laundry.
