Sponsorship programmes

We're looking for long-term sponsorship for our children. Sponsors will contribute £10 a month to be set aside for the child’s college or university fees, so that the children can follow their ambitions after leaving the orphanage and learn a livelihood. We aim to provide our children with the chance to give back to their society, by becoming doctors, midwives, engineers or teachers.

We think it is important for children to maintain a personal relationship with their sponsor, so we encourage sponsors to send personal gifts such as toys and games, which our trustees will take over annually when they visit in December. We will also record video-messages and take back letters and drawings for sponsors from children so sponsors can get to know our children.

Agricultural Project

We are currently raising money for an agricultural project to cultivate a field the orphanage owns a short drive away from the compound. We will spend the funds on seeds for maize, sorghum, cassava, beans, tomatoes and groundnuts as well as farming equipment and the salary of a watchman for the hottest days of the year to prevent bush-fires. Due to the highly undeveloped infrastructure in South Sudan, certain produce can be difficult to come by or hugely expensive during times of political conflict or bad weather as many products are imported from Uganda. It therefore remains very important to be able to produce food on site.

By growing our own produce, Charlotte Baby Home can provide its own food and sell the surplus at market for profit. Moreover, as the children will work together to cultivate and harvest the produce, they will learn agricultural skills for later life.Through expanding the agricultural project each year, we hope to make Charlotte Baby Home self-sustaining in the future.

The Nursery School

The Nursery School was set up to provide inexpensive primary school education for the children at Charlotte Baby Home as well as the children from the neighbouring villages. We cover the costs for the children’s education and learning material.

The Nursery School is attached to the Kajo Keji school for older children. There are eleven teachers in total, Edema Mark, Christine Kila, Juan Jessica, Mataya Jackson, Silimo Mary, Kwoji Alex, Margaret Kakule, Jogo Annet, Ludo Primo and Sworo Anthony.

The Infirmary

The infirmary on the compound is stocked with medicines and vitamins which our on-site nurse Agnes (left) administers to children. Vaccines are also administered against tuberculosis, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) tetanus, measles and polio. There is a hospital in Kajo Keji, but it is often understaffed, understocked and ill-equipped to deal with its patients effectively. The private Saint Morgan clinic is very expensive. Therefore, we believe it is important to keep medical care available on site. If our children become very ill, we take them across the border to Uganda, where they can benefit from the proper medical attention.

The Playground

With many thanks to Jorge and Gaby Espinosa, the children at Charlotte Baby Home now have a wonderful playground.
